Start with the contract, not the biggest factory

Contracts give a production run a clear target. Read the requested product and quantity first, then build the shortest line that can complete it. A small working line teaches more than a large floor full of machines whose inputs and outputs are unclear.

Diagnose idle time before buying equipment

Watch one section for a full cycle:

  • an empty input means the machine is starved;
  • a full output means it is blocked;
  • material waiting between two machines points to a downstream limit;
  • frequent vehicle trips with tiny loads suggest the transport step needs attention.

Change one bottleneck, run the line again, and only then expand. This avoids spending contract income on a machine that cannot stay busy.

Leave room around transfer points

Loading, unloading, storage, and belt junctions are the places most likely to need revision. Keep clear space near them and avoid placing permanent structures flush against the first layout. A compact line is useful only if vehicles and players can still reach it.

Use storage as a buffer, not a hiding place

A buffer helps separate two sections that run at different speeds. It also makes the problem visible: if storage keeps filling, the downstream section is slower; if it stays empty, the upstream section is not supplying enough. More storage delays a blockage but does not fix it.

Upgrade the measured bottleneck

Do not upgrade every machine evenly. Improve the step that is keeping the rest of the line idle. After an upgrade, check the line again because the bottleneck may move to a conveyor, storage point, loading area, or delivery vehicle.

Split jobs in co-op

Steam supports online co-op for up to four players. Assign temporary responsibilities—mining, factory routing, transport, and contracts—so two players do not unknowingly solve the same problem. Use the built-in text chat added in Phase 0 Part 1 when voice chat is unavailable.

Protect progress before experiments

Close the game before copying a local save, and keep a dated backup before testing a large redesign or any third-party modification. Steam Cloud is useful synchronization, but it is not a replacement for a deliberate backup you control.
